Hello again folks! So recently I have posted my favourite games of all time (
https://www.reddit.com/patientgamers/comments/cgr0m8/i_recently_finished_my_backlog_of_games_here_are/ ) and my least favourites (
https://www.reddit.com/patientgamers/comments/chnad2/i_recently_finished_my_backlog_of_games_i/ ) A few people asked for more reviews, but I wasn't going to as I didn't have anything else to really say.
However, a couple of people said they liked a that my opinions focused on how well the game fit around family life, as it can be hard to game when you have family and work commitments. Obviously a few of these will overlap with the favourites section. So
XanII and
scarabic I hope this new list helps you and others find a game you can enjoy without impacting you life to much!
As this is family orientated, I am going to add three kinds of games to this list. Games that are great to play WITH your SO if you don't have children (As these are the games I personally can sink the most hours into, as it includes my SO and is classed as 'family time') Games your can play WITH your children and games you can play on your own when you have a family (so best played in short bursts) unfortunately, my reviews will probably gear towards the newer consoles, as when I played the PS2- I was a kid without these commitments to think about!
The Sims Series (PC/ PS4)
The first game on this list is a classic game most people know about which hits two of our check boxes. You can play The Sims for short bursts and while you live your characters life or work on their house house. AND, if your like me you SO is really into interior design so she will steal the game and start building the house herself, so although there isn't a split screen mode, you can definitely play this with an SO. Now I personally have only ever played Sims 3 & 4 so I will mainly focus on these two so you can choose the game which is best for you (although people seem to LOVE the Sims 2, so don't discount it as your game of choice, I just don't know enough about it.)
Sims 3 and 4 are very different games and most people online will tell you that the Sims 3 is a far superior game, and in one way they are correct. Unlike 1,2 & 4 Sims 3 has a huge open world you can follow your Sim around in and because its not the latest in the series, you can get it and most of the DLC's for a few pounds each. Unfortunately, as it's an EA game there is a LOT of DLC's to buy, so even if you get all of them cheap it will probably add up and without them the game can seem a little bare boned. The main issue with the Sims 3 is the cost of the open world on your computer. I have a fairly new gaming laptop, and this game takes a long time to load.
Sims 4 has been simplified, and the graphics given a more cartoony spin, which i personally prefer for this game. It looses its open world, but that means that it loads and renders a lot quicker, and can be played on lower end computers and consoles. I have a laptop and PS4, but find myself gravitating towards the PS4 as I prefer a control for most things. You can get the base game fairly cheap, and there are frequent sales to get the DLC's cheaper, but not as much as the third game.
The reason I mention BOTH of these games is if you have a lack of time, Sims 3's loading times can become a real problem. I sometimes have 20 mins to play a fast game. If something takes 5 mins to load, that's a quarter of my time gone immediately which just sucks and in the Sims 3 thanks to the pure amount of customisation options, these long loads pop up frequently which just doesn't work for me. So if you only have limited time, I would advise getting the Sims 4 and leaving the open world behind.
Crash Bash (PS1)
This is a mini game bundle which is tons of fun to play with your SO and can be played in short bursts. It needs to be a part of this list, but if you want more information I went into more details in my all time favourite list.
Castle Crashers (Xbox 360)
Castle Crashers is another brilliant game, and is a perfect choice for any busy person. Currently it is only on Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC, however it has been announced for the Switch and PS4 for later this year, so keep your eye out if you like the sound of it. Castle Crashers if a 2D Brawler, where you clobber enemies. IIRC the story is to rescue princesses, but I could be wrong. There are multiple characters to unlock (? You may have them all already, IDK) and collectables which you definitely DO unlock, that are animals inflated with helium that give you bonuses along with weapons. The controls are easy to learn (move, jump and hit) each level is short and sweet AND it has split screen multiplayer (maybe up to four people) Even better is although you beating people up I don't think there is any blood effects, so it has an age rating of 7, so you can play with your kid as well! So to recap its a great fun game, which can be played in short bursts, with you SO and with your kid! Winning all round, so keep your eye out for the remaster!
Ratchet and Clank (PS2, PS3 & PS4)
So, I was a little dubious to add this series to the list as the levels can be quite long with quite a gap between check points, HOWEVER I also get that some parents are gamer's that want to get stuck into a good game and honestly, the ratchet and clank games are really good! The Original R&C games on the PS2 were made by the same makers of the original Spyro the Dragon games. I am unsure if they did ALL of the games (or the recent remake on PS4 of the first game) You play as ratchet, a mechanic who come across a robot on the run called Clank. Each game can be quite long, but is rated 7, with very little violent. every enemy is an alien or a robot. Ratchet uses clank as a jetpack to glide or double jump and a ratchet as a weapon and to solve puzzles. On top pf this is the games huge arsenal of wacky weapons that just make the game. There is a reason there is like 13 games in this series- It's because they are brilliant. The controls are easy to remember and master and the game has multiple difficulties depending on your time. For a parent, I would even say Normal is a stretch. The final boss is HARD when you don't have all the time to master everything, but on easy this game is a fun adventure spanning the universe with a lots of colourful characters and locals.
Crawl (Switch)
Crawl is a brilliant game to play with your friends, or in short bursts however if your SO is a graphics snob like mine, they probably won't play. Crawl is an 8-bit dungeon crawler where you face off against 3 other players, either AI or your friends in local coop. You all start in a room and try to kill each other. The last man standing gets full health and the other 3 become ghosts who can posses traps and summon monsters (who they then control) to try and kill the human. whoever kills him become the human. You only level up your human while you play as him. When your human hits level 10, you can face the final boss. The first human to kill the boss as a human wins. Its a simple loop, with dungeons being randomly generated. While I wouldn't really recommend playing on your own with AI, I wish there were more than 3 end bosses and a bit more variety with the dungeons (different biomes maybe) this is a great fun game to play in short bursts with friends (although the narrator is pretty creepy, so maybe keep your kids in the other room if possible)
Spyro the Dragon Reignited Trilogy (PS4)
Playing either the original PS1 games, or the resent remakes is honestly a joy. They are kid friendly colourful and because the levels are each contained behind a portal, you can complete each level in a short amount of time. Even finding every gem and collectable on a given level doesn't take all that long so its perfect for short gaming bursts, as well as introducing your own children to video games. This was also on my favourites list, so read more there.
Payday 2 (PC)
This game is perfect for short bursts, as each level only take around ten mins to complete. It an older shooter, which also means that it is fairly cheap. While this game is only two player online, it is frequently on sale for a few pounds, so if you have two computers a copy for you and your SO is still cheaper than a newer game. Wait for a sale and each DLC are often 80% off and worth around a £1 each. The beauty of this, is if ONE of you has the DLC's, if you host your SO can play those levels free of charge (but wont have access to the new playable characters or weapons, but it means they can pick and choose when you can get everything if you want for level variety) I love this FPS wave shooter, and I usually hate those kinds of games. If you want to know more, check out my review of all time favourite games.
Sea of Thieves (PC)
This game is perfects for short sessions with your friends. Its still fairly pricey, so buying two copies can set you back, but its great fun with you SO. I shes not into games then its worth playing by yourself- But only if your have friends. This is a game that really suits a pick up and play lifestyle- But I personally don't like playing it alone.
Lego Marvel Super Heroes (PC)
Lego Marvel Super Heroes is a brilliant game to play with your children. Combat is simple and easy to learn and death isn't really punished. There are fun puzzles that your kids can learn, and you could pitch in when needed. To be honest, this goes for EVERY Lego game- and there are a LOT. so if you love the game, you have found a frequently released series to keep you busy for ages. My only word of warning is that each game is very similar in formula. I loved the Lego Star Wars on the DS, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes on the PC, but I haven't really gotten into any others between that and since. But that might be different if I had kids of my own
Anno 1440/ 1880 (PC)
I again mentioned these games in my all time favourites review, so I won't go to much into it here. DON'T play this game if you only have a short amount of time because trust me your 5 mins will turn into 5 hours without you realising it. But if you have plenty of time to play with your partner, this is a great series to get stuck into.
The Forest (PC)
The Forest is a survival game my SO and me have sunk a lot of hour into. Two player survival games in general are really good if your playing with an SO, although again you will need a large amount of time to invest into it. Many survival games also fit the bill, but personally the Forest was the best one, as it isn't in early access with nice graphics and minimum glitches with a interesting story as well. The runner up would have to be 7 Days to Die because it gives a point to the survival- Survive the horde. I personally didn't like things like Ark, as there didn't seem a point other than to build. My SO loves building, where as I personally prefer a story or a goal as I am bad at making my own goal.
Guild Wars 2 (PC)
Another game that appeared in my favourites. You can play this in short bursts if you choose, and complete a few missions at a time, but it's an MMO so it will take a while (but this is how I did it, so it is possible) Whats great about this game though is the base game is completely free. So if you have a couple of PC's that can run it, both you and your SO can join and do everything together.
Crash Team Racing (PS1 & PS4)
Honestly, MOST kart racers tick every box. Most are split screen, so you can play with your SO. Most are kid friendly, so your child can join and most races are done within 5/10 mins if you only have a little time to play. I chose the Crash Team Racing remake for this list as personally I think its the best one. The seasoned events give you rewards for playing, but you can still progress through these seasons by completing the daily events in 2 races and a time trail, which is probably a 20 min task. The kart customisation is great and the graphics are beautiful. HOWEVER this might be to recent yo be classed as a patient game (I can't remember the release date), so sorry if I shouldn't be recommending it. If you want and older game OR you have a child, Mario Kart 8 (Switch) might be a better fit. Is not quite as fun IMO, but the game is easier for children in general, where as Crash's skip mechanics might be hard for them to grasp.
Little Big Planet (PS3)
Little big planet is a game about creativity, which I always think is brilliant for children. However, for the younger kids who won't learn that, there is also a fun little platforming main game which is surprising long. What's even better is it can all be played in Co-op with your SO or your kid, and each level isn't overly long or hard, so you can play on your own in short sessions if you want to. Don't feel bad if you don't have a PS3, and there is also a version on the PSP and PS4!
Minecraft (PS4)
Talking about creativity, Minecraft is KING with split-screen coop, the ability to build and do anything (even if you go off to kill some enemies) We all know what this game is by now, so I won't go into all that much depth, but if you want a 2 player game suitable for your family- this is it, and trust me- It's on whatever consoles you have from the previous generation (and some even older)
Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox 360)
While this isn't kid friendly, it is perfects for short sessions and playing split-screen with your SO if they like FPS shooters. Again, I mentioned this in my all time favourites and don't want to repeat myself, so go and read that :)
Portal 1& 2 (PS4)
Portal 1 & 2 are both brilliant level based puzzles games. The controls and 'rules' of the puzzles are easy to grasp and remember and the sense of humour in the game is unparalleled. While these are largely for playing by yourself, Portal 2 does have a two player mode if you have a second PC/ copy of the game, which gives you a chance to play even more!
The Last of Us (PS4)
So this is probably the most hardcore game on the list, but I felt there needed to be a couple of serious games that you might just want to sit down and play on your own on a day off. The last of us has simple to remember mechanics and the game isn't overly long. But it's atmosphere, story and characters are brilliant and well worth a free weekend to play. If your SO likes to watch, she will enjoy this story.
Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2 (PS4)
Both of the Original Sin games are brilliant. So far I have only finished 1, and dabbled in 2 but I hear 2 is the better and that's saying something as number 1 is REALLY good. You can't play this with children, and you will need a long time to finish it, but for hardcore gamers and RPG fans who wanna play with your SO, this is the game for you. I think my favourite function is decision making- Every decision you choose, but if you SO was to disagree, you then play a rock paper scissors mini game to 'win' and proceed the story the to suit the winner.
A Way Out (PS4)
Another brilliant game to play with your SO, with short story segments. with fun little mini games, all completely split screen. The game has a cool little story with a great ending and is a great team based action, with light puzzling game.
Diablo 3
4 player coop fun, you can level your character and kill demons until your hearts content. The story is fine, but with a brilliant atmosphere and lore if you are into that stuff. A serious game and def not for kids, but you can play for as long or as short as you like! I would recommend giving yourself a bit of time to do the campaign and get your character to level 70, then the end game is much easier to do in smaller chunks.
Borderlands 2 (PS4)
Again another huge and brilliant game which will take a lot of your time (but I think this will be the last one?) as its perfect to play with your SO if they like FPS shooters. We all know Borderlands at this stage, so I won't go to crazy on what its about. But the split screen mode is brilliant fun.
*A quick note before I move on to the last few games, all of these are for the new Nintendo Switch. This is the BEST console for parents with little time. It's pick up and play feature which pauses everything when turned off is perfect for those quick sessions you normally wouldn't be able to do (for example a Legend of Zelda bathroom break)
Stardew Valley (Switch)
Stardew Valley is the perfect game to relax and chill out to and great to play in short bursts (however much like Anno, you will also loose 5 years in a blink of an eye, so be careful!) It is the perfect little pick up and play relaxing game, and its latest updated added multiplayer if you own two copies of the game/ console. To be honest, it doesn't really need to player for you to enjoy this with your SO. My partner played it on the PS4, while I played my own far on the switch (as there is no cross platform multiple) and we had so much fun while doing this. I won't give it its own section, but Animal Crossing: New Leaf is very similar in its chilled out nature and pick up and play game play loop, so if you only have a 3DS that is another brilliant substitute.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (Switch)
I am sure this game is Cupid and the Easter Bunnies love child. You play as cute little bunnies, frogs etc in a giant love heart shaped spaceship. All love has left the universe, so you need to find it. Each level lasts 15-20 mins, and up to 4 people can play using a joy-con each. you play as a little spaceman who runs around inside the ship. You have to run to a console which then controls one gun, to defend the ship. This issue being there are a total of 7 consoles so even if you have a full squad of 4, you still need to coordinate. You can play it on your own with a AI dog, but I would recommend saving this one for playing with your SO or friends.
Mario Odyssey/ Pokemon Let's Go (Switch)
(Full disclosure- I haven't played Pokemon Let's Go) Now, I know I look crazy lumping these two very different games together. But I have done this as they share something in common. Absolutely AWFUL multiplayer. Normally this isn't a great thing, but if you have a young kid who wants to get involved, then these are pretty good games to let them get involved. In Mario player one plays as Mario, where as player 2 plays as the hat. He can then attach himself to whatever enemy and player one transforms into them to complete the puzzle. From what I hear in Pokemon, they can't wander on their own. They can only control their own pokemon in battles, making in 2v1 and very easy. Mario Odyssey is one of my favourite games, and is again on my favourite game list, and would recommend anyone trying it on their own - But don't play it with your partner as trust me- You have better things to do.
Breath of the Wild (Switch)
I won't go into to much detail, as we all know what Breath of the Wild is by now and I personally didn't like the game (
https://www.reddit.com/patientgamers/comments/bou530/i_think_its_time_to_give_up_on_zelda_breath_of/ ) However for a serious gamer who has no time at all, this is the biggest and most in-depth RPG you can get on the switch, and begs mentioning due to the switch's portability.
Overcooked (Switch)
Overcooked is a brilliant little cooking game, which simultaneously gets easier and harder with more people. You have more hands to get the cooking done quicker. But everyone also gets in each others way. This is a fun little game, perfects for quick sessions, or playing with your partner (unless you argue a lot... Then maybe don't do this game) There is also a second one, which has just as good reviews as the first, if not better- But I haven't played it as I haven't finished the first one yet!
Darkest Dungeon (Switch)
I'll end on a more recent game which I have barely scratched the surface of, however I feel it worth mentioning for hardcore gamers who want a serious game, but that can still be done in short bursts. The Darkest Dungeon is a turn based combat game. Each dungeon at the start can be done in 15 mins, however later ones might get longer. But because it is turn based with no time limit, you can easily turn your switch off and pick it up when your next free. It is heavily inspired by Lovecraftian Mythos, where you have to manage not only your teams health, but their sanity too. It is seeping it atmosphere and pretty difficult, but that whats the game is about. Making difficult choices and dealing with the consequences. I would advise putting it on easy mode if you don't have much time- The combat is just as hard, the main thing that's affected is getting an experience boost to alleviate the need for grinding in the late game
Anyway, that's all I have for now! I have recently been asked to do a list of 'Hidden Gems' so that is what I will work on next! But if you guys have any other lists you would like me to do, please let me know and I will get to it when I can!
submitted by Two huge months coming up – October and November are usually the biggest months in terms of new releases, and we have some absolutely huge games coming out soon. Before we dive into it all, let’s start with some news:
NEWS: One of the biggest controversies over the last year, and really in the history of gaming in general, has been the battle over loot boxes, specifically those that contain items that increase your powecompetitive ability such as seen in many of EA games like all Ultimate Team modes, as well as most infamously in Star Wars: Battlefield 2. This past month,
the Belgian government officially launched an investigation into whether Ultimate Team modes were a form of “gambling”. While other companies like Blizzard have removed loot boxes in Belgium to comply with local laws, EA seems to be standing its ground, and preparing for a legal battle that will shape the future of the company’s business practices. As a note, this battle is so crucial because if these modes are deemed to be gambling, games like FIFA and Madden will be restricted when it comes to children being able to buy them, a massive blow to any company’s bottom line.
Sony finally seems to be relenting on their policy of banning cross-play functionality between Playstation owners and Xbox owners, with many crediting the smash success of games like Fortnite pressuring them into folding. The feature is now in beta testing and will hopefully see a full roll out in the near future
Telltale Games, the studio most known for making high quality story driven games from big licenses, most notably The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, as well as their own original IP The Wolf Within, announced they were firing the vast majority of their staff and reducing to a skeleton crew of 25 employees. The news came as a shock just as they were releasing the finale of their critically lauded Walking Dead game. The first two of four episodes are completed, but the final two are currently in limbo
Sony launches a “Playstation Classic” coming to stores in December for $100. The console will come preloaded with 20 classic games form the original Playstation including Final Fantasy VII and Tekken 3. Personally I’m not a huge fan of nostalgia shit like this, especially for a console like the original Playstation that isn’t exactly at the top of the list for “Hey 90s kids, remember this???” but I’m sure some will enjoy it
League of Legends is currently just starting up their Season 8 World Championship in Korea. Is anyone still watching this? I don't think it's a hot take at all at this point to say we've already hit peak LoL and it's all downhill from here. Add in all of the shitty business practices Riot has done, the way the constantly fuck up the game's meta on a monthly basis via neverending tweaks and reworks instead of letting the game breathe, a huge sexual harassment scandal last month, and a big downsizing in its esports production budget and team, it's hard to find bright spots for League in 2018.
RELEASES: Magic the Gathering: Arena: (PC) - Technically just an open beta and technically released at the very end of September, I'm still putting this here because I love this game. It's finally the modern and polished game client MTG needs to compete with Hearthstone. Also with Artifact and Gwent Homecoming/Thronebreaker both being released in the next few months, the digital card game market is gonna get a lot more crowded. Watch out, Hearthstone
Forza Horizon 4: 10/2 (PC, XB1) – The 11th release in the long running franchise, Forza has always been a bit of a little brother to Sony’s Gran Turismo, they are still usually of fairly high quality. The Horizon subseries offers an open world experience, in contrast to the “main branch” of Forza games, which are not. Reviews on this particular entry seem to be quite high, so pick it up if you’re into racing games.
Mega Man 11: 10/2 (PC, PS4, NS, XB1) – Megaman returns after a long hiatus. The side scrolling retro style game seems to be having a huge revival recently after the success of games like Cuphead, and the reviews seem to be saying the game is a quality entry in the series.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: 10/5 (PC, PS4, XB1) – Assassins Creed takes its 11th entry to Ancient Greece, continuing on the success of last year’s origins. Reviews seem to be putting it as quite solid, though perhaps not up to Origin’s gorgeous level of world design. Probably an unpopular take on this subreddit, but I’m an admitted Ass Creed hater. That being said, I totally understand those who do like them and really do have to give credit to the world design in Origin, they always knock that out of the park and Odyssey seems to give Ancient Sparta a similar level of detail. I just wish there was more of a focus on actual assassinations, and not collecting nodes of stuff on a map ad nauseam.
Super Mario Party: 10/5 (NS) – Also the 11th entry in a long running series. 2015’s Mario Party 10 received pretty negative reviews due to a perceived overabundance of luck based events and boring board design, so hopefully this will be a return to form.
WWE 2K19: 10/9 (PC, PS4, XB1) – According to the game director, this game will be a return to a more “arcadey” and fast-paced style after the previous few entries were perceived to be too simulation-y and slow. Probably a good move for the series, as pro wrestling has always been about flashy moves and not hyper realistic grappling
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4: 10/12 (PC, PS4, XB1) – Here’s a big one. This entry represents huge change for the Call of Duty series, removing the single player campaign mode, adding the fad of the year in a battle royale mode (dubbed “Blackout” mode), and an all-encompassing Season Pass for DLC of new maps rather than the ability to buy maps a la carte. I’ve actually heard really good things about Blops 4, particularly the new battle royale mode, and may actually pick it up since it will be available for the first time on the Blizzard Launcher on PC since I can get it for free that way. Haven’t played a CoD since MW2, so it should be a fun time to jump back in.
Starlink: Battle for Atlas: 10/16 (PC, PS4, XB1) – Honestly, I had never even heard of this game until I started writing this preview. This is a brand new Ubisoft IP, and is a 3rd person action game with a heavy emphasis on space dogfighting battles and will have rare features in modern games like local split screen multiplayer. One of the weirder things is apparently this game will have accompanying real life physical… toys? That you can buy, and then “mount” to your controller to add new features and abilities to your ship. It seems very… strange… but new ideas are always refreshing to see, and the Devs have said you can opt out of actually purchasing these toys if you want, easing my pay2win concerns
For Honor: Marching Fire 10/16 – this DLC is being touted as the biggest content update in For Honor’s history. I’ve never played so I can’t speak to the game’s current state, but I’ve heard the game has improved immensely since moving to dedicated servers earlier this year. Marching Fire includes a new Chinese themed faction and new PVP and PVE modes
Soulcalibur VI 10/19 (PC, PS4, XB1) – My favorite fighting game series, this time with 100% more Geraldo del Rivero. Very excited to pick this one up, though the news that it has characters that already exists physically on the disc you buy being sold separately as DLC is a really shitty business practice.
Red Dead Redemption 2: 10/26 (PS4, XB1) – Here’s the other big one. It will almost certainly be immediately thrown into Game of the Year contention alongside God of War. Very excited to jump into this one, as Rockstar hasn’t released a full game since 2013’s GTA V. RDR2 features a new multiplayer experience, and it will be VERY interesting to see what “lessons” they’ve learned from how ruthlessly they’ve been able to monetize GTA Online. I’d expect nothing less than a fantastic single player experience, but have deep concerns about what may happen in the coming years with RDR2’s online component. Did you know it would cost over $4,500 real life dollars to buy one of each car in GTA Online? Yikes!
As always, feel free to join the subreddit’s discord here:
